Today's lesson is lesson number three, and it's all about focusing on what you can control. So I've been talking about five things I wish I knew before I started in business. And we're up to lesson three, and this one I wanna share with you today is probably one of the most important ones, because this is all about you and what you have control over.
Because in life, we need to let go of all the things that we can't control and we need to strengthen what we can control. So if you can focus in life and business on the things that you can control, that will change everything for you. So when I first started out in business, were many things that I had no control over. I couldn't control, say, chicken prices going up in our restaurants. I couldn't control in our country what I had to pay for staff.
I couldn't control when the fruit and vegetables went up. There's a lot of things, there's a lot of moving parts that you are not able to control, but these are the things that you can control. And I believe will help you to become a better business owner, a better boss, and it'll also help to stack the odds in your favor. It'll start to give you that edge and that advantage.
These are the things that you have control over when you focus on them. And number one is your mindset. Okay, so there's no surprises about that. Everything is about your mindset. It is literally your superpower. So when you can learn to really navigate your mindset, a positive mindset, it's gonna make a massive difference for you because your attitude will control everything.
because your attitude is something that you have control over. The way that you look at things, your positive mindset, the things that you put into your head on a daily basis, like positive content into your head on daily basis, your mindset will help you and that you have control over. The next thing you have control over is how you start your day. What does your morning look like? So for instance, are you getting up in the morning and literally just rolling out of bed?
Angela Vassallo (02:19.544)
kind of just, you know, floating around, taking your time or are you getting up at a certain time each morning early with a game plan? I'm gonna work out today. I'm gonna go in the sauna. I'm gonna go take the dog for a walk. I'm gonna go for a run. I'm gonna go to my class. What are you doing that's helping you get into a really good place in your head? Are you going straight into the news? Is it negative?
You know, think about those things. Are you having a really great healthy breakfast or are you not having a breakfast at all? I mean, you've to think about what you can do to win the day. So the first thing is it's about winning the morning. So if you can set yourself up and have a really great morning, I know when I do that, set my, I have a game plan every morning, not a lot changes there and I start my day. I know where I'm at. I've read some affirmations, read my goals and I've done my workout in the morning and I'm ready to go.
always dressed ready, prepared to start the day. So win the morning. That's one thing that you definitely have control over. Another thing that you have control over is how you react in a situation. So think about this. What are you doing in a situation that is a stressful situation? How do you react to things? Do you like explode? Do you get upset? Do you run away? Do you argue? Are you...
Defensive, think about those things. How do you react in a stressful situation? Because your reaction is what you have control over and that will come down to your emotional intelligence. See, I believe your EQ, your emotional intelligence is far more important than your IQ in life. It will take you further down the road than anything. One of my mentors told me that many years ago, your EQ will outweigh your IQ eventually.
So your emotional intelligence is so important in life. So emotional intelligence, having control over how you react to things, the best way to do that is just think before you react. Take a moment, take a beep and just think, I'm not gonna react to this. I'm gonna think about this for a moment. I actually challenge you to start thinking about successful people or listening to them or watching them.
Angela Vassallo (04:40.062)
And usually when they're asked a question, they'll take a moment and think about it before they react and answer. So that is a really important thing because it's not always like they're jumping and reacting straight away, they think it through. They're taking a moment. And that's a very, it's a very powerful thing to do in life is to really think about how you react before you do react and.
you're not happy with how you've reacted afterwards. But if you have a habit or a default that you keep falling back into, that you react a certain way every time something upsets you, that's going to come down to working on your emotional intelligence. You can change that and you do have control over that. The next thing is your education and learning. This you have control over.
I've always said that life is our biggest teacher. I've always been a student, a student of personal development, a student of learning, a student of growing. You don't just go to school and then it's all over. And a lot of people do do that. They don't learn anymore. It's very important to constantly educate yourself to have that edge, to have that advantage. So if you need to learn how to be good on social media, go into a course and learn about how to do that.
If you wanna get good on podcasts, learn how to do that. If you wanna be a better speaker, go to a speaking school or you wanna learn how to speak on stages. Learn what you need to learn. Read books, listen to podcasts, get some really great content and learn. Even if it's to learn about your health, how can you be healthier? There's so many fabulous podcasts out now about how to become healthier.
you know, doing these cold plunges and eating a certain way and certain amount of protein that you put in your body to help you function better. So definitely learning is something that you have control over and that is all about listening as well. So if you can, you can be somebody that is really, really good at listening, because a lot of people don't listen. They just don't. They're always thinking about what they're going to say next. Become a good listener and then actually become observant.
Angela Vassallo (06:53.752)
to how many people don't listen, how they're constantly butting over the top of you. Become a good listener and that will serve you very well because then you become very observant about things. And when you're observant, you have your ear to the ground, opportunities come, you don't miss them because you're not always trying to fight to be heard. You are actually listening and you are learning. So definitely always growing and learning something you have control over and listening.
is something that you have control over as well. The next thing is surrounding yourself with the right people. Think about the type of people that you have around you at the moment. You know, are they negative? Do they walk in the door and they're a moody person? Are you constantly thinking to yourself, these people around me, like, am I worried about what sort of mood they're gonna be in when they walk in today? Are you employing staff that are like that?
that are causing problems, that every time something comes out of their mouth, they don't have anything good to say about somebody. These type of people you wanna avoid. These type of people you wanna avoid spending a lot of time with because you don't wanna be dragged down by that type of thing. It's really important to have people around you that are positive, that are a reflection of you, your mindset where you're going, that are
are supporting you that are saying, hey, you can do this. They're not saying, what are you doing now? Why are you doing that? What's all that about? Like they are supporting you. These are the people you want to have around you. You're always going to come up against people that are not like that and are negative. And I would just say spend the least amount of time with them. Obviously we have to spend some time with people like that. If it's in your family and that you can't avoid it, but try to spend the least amount of time with those type of people.
because if you are somebody that's wanting to change and wanting to grow and wanting to succeed and go to the next level, you are gonna have to surround yourself with people that are just like you, like -minded, and that are going to support you to get to the top. Because you do not wanna be challenged every day with negative people around you because all that will do is hold you back. And the next thing that you have control over is setting your goals and affirmations. So what's your game plan?
Angela Vassallo (09:18.432)
You know, think about what that is because, you know, people don't set any goals. A lot of people don't. If you think about a football team or a basketball team, that team has a game plan of what they're going to do before they get on that court or that field. And that's only for an hour or two hours. But most people don't even have a game plan for their entire life. Set your goals, figure it out.
work in 90 day action plans. That's what my mentor always told me. What do I want to achieve in the next 90 days? So setting your goals you have control over. And if you read them every day, you're gonna get closer to them. If you narrow them down to about five in 90 days and you read them every single day, a few times a day, you'll have more chance of achieving that. And what are you doing?
How are you moving in the direction of those goals? It's one thing to have those goals and read them, but what are you doing step by step on a daily basis to move you closer to succeeding in those goals? So there's the things that I wanted to talk about today that are all in your control. Because in life, the hardest thing most people can't cope with is being out of control, right? And there's a lot of variables in business.
and in life. But the more that you can put yourself in a situation where you say, hey, these are the things I do have control over. These are the things I will focus on strengthening and the ones that I can't control, I have to let them go. But the good things that you can control are going to set you up for better things to come in. So you do have more control over your life and where it's going. I hope some of those points that I gave you today really help you.
I know they helped me, but like I said, it's been years and years of personal development growth, all the wins, all the losses, all the failures, all of the ups and downs, and you learn from them. Then you take that information, and then you can teach it, and you can really change people's lives. So I hope that's helped you today, and I look forward to seeing you in the next lesson. Bye for now.
